The 'R&apos ### stands for 'Reach'. This was stated very clearly in the keynote speech at the Apple Special Event. (Go back and watch it again). When Apple executive vice president Phil Schiller was on stage introducing the new iPhones, he said Apple wanted to 'reach&apos ### as many people as possible with a lower-cost iPhone.

There are many rumours about the meaning, some say it means Retina HD while others propose it means Regular or Rational but the exact meaning is not known. :(

It's Apple's custom to add the S to the second and improved offering of a model and sometimes give it a meaning eg. Speed, Siri, Security.

In the case of the X[R] there is no such meaning, but I can speculate that internally it was (and very unofficially) the iРhone X 'Reduced' because of its goal of being more affordable.

It's quite common at Apple for a 'development nickname' to end up being the official name.
