Strictly speaking, Linux is a program initially developed by Linus Torvalds and serves as the kernel of an operating system called GNU, conceived by Richard Stallman, the combination of which is called GNU/Linux, however, many people just call the combination of the two Linux even though Linux is only a small (and very important) part of that system.
